Spanish

General Overview

Spanish at our school aims to engender values of respect and intercultural understanding and create an inclusive and positive learning environment helping our children to develop as global citizens. In the MFL department, we will provide an inspirational, inclusive, and coherent knowledge-led curriculum that allows students to understand Spanish and fosters a love of languages.

Key Stage 2

Children are introduced to Spanish in KS2. Lessons across the Key Stage 2 support the skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Spanish. Children are taught to listen attentively to spoken native language and respond, joining in with songs, rhymes, and games. We aim to provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language to lay the foundation for further foreign language teaching at KS3 and KS4.

Key Stage 3

As part of the Spanish curriculum in KS3, we ensure students develop resilience and confidence in their reading, listening, writing, and oracy skills in Spanish by studying themes that will present a variety of vocabulary which will challenge learners. Within our lessons, we embed challenge games, metacognition, memory techniques, and literacy into our curriculum.

Key Stage 4

The Key Stage 4 MFL Department is used in preparation for GCSE Spanish. GCSE Spanish focuses on encouraging, inspiring, and challenging students to communicate effectively in writing for a variety of purposes across a range of specified contexts in Spanish, manipulate the Spanish language using and adapting a variety of structures and vocabulary with increasing frequency, interact effectively in speech, initiate and develop conversations, identify the overall message, key points, details, and opinions in a variety of short and longer spoken or written passages, translate into and out of the Spanish language.
